This study was conducted to evaluate the health-related factors associated with renal function using serum creatinine levels (SC) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The study subjects were 833 male industrial organic solvent workers who participated in a health check-up at a hospital. Using a questionnaire, health-related information such as their age, years on the job, smoking habits, exercising habits, and drinking habits was obtained. Their body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, serum creatinine levels and glomerular filtration rate were also measured. The results of this research show that the older the test subjects got, the longer the duration of their employment and the more frequent they drank, the more their mean SC values and GFR mean values decreased. However, the higher the BMI of the test subject, the more the mean SC values increased, while the more the GFR mean values decreased. Additionally, the mean values of SC and GFR in workers that have a disease is lower than that of healthy workers. Also the mean values of SC and GFR in smokers showed a larger increase than hat of nonsmokers. These results suggest that health related factors such as aging, drinking and obesity have an inreased risk for renal function decrease.
